MRC marks World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2025 — Standing on the Side of Humanity

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is celebrated every year on 8 May, marking the birth of Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, and honouring the unwavering humanitarian spirit of millions of volunteers and staff who serve communities in need around the world.

This year, MRC marked the World Red Cross Red Crescent Day 2025 with heartfelt gratitude and pride, celebrating the dedication, courage, and enduring commitment of our volunteers, who are at the heart of everything we do. From emergency response and First Aid, to promoting elderly wellness, disaster risk reduction and community resilience, our volunteers and staff stand alongside the people who need them most —guided by the Fundamental Principles of the Movement and the belief that humanity must always come first.

“I sincerely appreciate the hard work and commitment of all our volunteers, members, and staff at MRC, As part of this global Movement, we have done exemplary work and we must continue to strengthen our humanitarian efforts together.” said MRC President Ali Nashid. 

He also paid tribute to humanitarian workers who have lost their lives while serving their communities, reminding us of the immense sacrifices made in the name of humanity. MRC Secretary General echoed these sentiments, honouring the memory of volunteers who lost their lives in the line of duty, and recognising the courage and dedication of volunteers working on the frontlines globally.

RCRC Day 2025 celebration activities across MRC Units 
To mark this year’s World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, various activities were carried out digitally and through community engagement events led by our Units across the country.

Run for Humanity - Hithadhoo Unit, Addu City 
In Addu City, our annual “Run for Humanity” brought together community members, volunteers and partners in a vibrant show of support for MRC’s humanitarian mission. More than just a run, this annual event serves as a meaningful way for the public to engage with MRC, learn more about our programmes, promote health and wellbeing, and raise vital funds to support our programmes and emergency response work. It was a true reflection of the spirit of unity and humanity that drives our work every day. 


Childrens Fair - Male' City Unit, Male' City
In Malé City, the MRC Malé City Unit joined the Children’s Day Fair 2025, where we welcomed everyone who stopped by our stalls and joined us in celebrating World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with the community, share our work, and inspire young hearts about the power of humanitarian action. A heartfelt thank you to our incredible volunteers who made it all possible with their energy and dedication. 


Zuvaanunge (youth) Gathering -  Kulhudhuffushi City Unit, Kulhudhuffushi City

As part of the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day celebrations,  MRC Kulhudhuffushi City Unit Youth Council together with MRC National Youth Council together  a vibrant “Zuvaanunge Gathering” (Youth gathering) by the beach in Kulhudhuffushi City.

The gathering brought together existing and aspiring volunteers, alongside members of the Youth Leaders’ Society of Kulhudhuffushi for an engaging and inspiring afternoon. Through a series of interactive activities and open discussions, participants explored pressing youth issues and shared ideas on how to address them collectively. Insights from this gathering will play a key role in shaping the future youth programmes of the Maldivian Red Crescent, ensuring that young voices remain at the heart of our humanitarian action.



Childrens Evening  -  Kulhudhuffushi City Unit, Hdh. Neykurendhoo
Joining the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day celebrations, MRC Kulhudhuffushi City Unit  participated in a special childrens evening organized by Neykurendhoo Council and localstakkehodlers to host a special children’s event in Neykurendhoo, merging the celebration of RCRC Day and Children’s Day.

The event brought together children, families, and community members for a vibrant afternoon filled with fun and learning. Activities included a book reading of “A Girl Who Grew a Beach”, hands-only CPR demonstrations, and a variety of interactive sessions designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and teach life-saving skills in an engaging way.

This event was  a meaningful opportunity to instill the values of compassion, care, and community spirit. the very heart of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement  in the youngest members of our community, while celebrating the power of humanity and togetherness.
