Haa Dhaalu Finey

In June 2023, jointly with NDMA  MRC conducted a five-day Hazard, Vulnerability, and Capacity Assessment (HVCA) and Island Disaster Management Development workshop in Haa Dhaalu Finey.  This workshop marked a significant step towards enhancing disaster preparedness and resilience through inclusive community governance. The resulting Island Disaster Management Plan was then validated through a community consultation.

The baseline survey conducted during the workshop revealed that 72.7% of respondents in Finey felt unprepared for disasters, with 88.6% acknowledging the likelihood of being impacted by at least one hazard, particularly tsunamis.

Practical activities and key informant interviews allowed participants to gather valuable knowledge from the community, including representatives from key stakeholders like the Council, Health Center, Fenaka, Finey School, Women's Development Committee (WDC), and the tourism sector. While Finey has experienced rare flooding incidents and other disasters, participants drew from their experiences to identify challenges and mitigation strategies. The need for necessary resources and First Aid Training within the community emerged as crucial elements to boost resilience and response capacity. The Council of Finey took ownership of compiling the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Action and Response Plan, including the Island Disaster Management Plan (IDMP).

While the disaster management committee was not established during the visit, due to council members' absence, plans for its formation were discussed and will be implemented for future CERT training. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to strengthening disaster resilience by the community in HDh. Finey.

Based on the information and inputs collected from the community, MRC will be implementing Priority Implementation Projects (PIP's) under the project to equip and enhance the community preparedness to disasters and emergencies.
