Kaafu Dhiffushi

In June 2023, jointly with NDMA MRC conducted a Hazard Vulnurablity Capacity Assessment (HVCA) & Island Disaster Management Development (IDMP) workshop in Kaafu Dhiffushi. The primary aim of this workshop was to strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience in K. Dhiffushi through the promotion of inclusive community governance. Participants of the workshop engaged in various data collection methods to complete the Hazard, Vulnerability, Capacity, Assessment (HVCA), which served as the foundation for the Island Disaster Management Plan (IDMP). This plan was subsequently validated through a community consultation process.

The IDMP has yielded several positive outcomes; it has raised awareness about natural and man-made hazards amongst the community and stakeholders on the island, leading to a greater understanding of the need for risk reduction. Furthermore, the workshop identified various ways where the community can increase their resilience to disasters by implementing various measures, such as the development of community-based early warning systems, disaster action plans, and promotion of resilient infrastructure investments. This process also enhanced coordination and collaboration among various stakeholders on the island, fostering a better understanding of the connections between DRR and sustainable development.

Based on the information and inputs collected from the community, MRC will be implementing Priority Implementation Projects (PIP's) under the project to equip and enhance the community preparedness to disasters and emergencies.
